As former residents of Pana, we were delighted to see the web sight. Our son e-mailed it to us and it was quite a surprise. We will always think of Pana as home no matter how far away we live. It is home to our family, friends and hearts. Thanks for a taste of home on the computer. Donnie & Lorraine Manuel, Chattanooga, TN

You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy. Just finished reading the News-Palladium and noticed the Web-site. Since I get back to the old stompin' grounds only once every couple of years, I suppose I'll be making frequent visits to the site. Very professional, but please more photos. Maybe one of that new Pana High School and the other school's too.

Very nice web site. I visited with Jim Deere recently regarding economic development in Pana. Mr. Deere certainly is a credit to the enthusiasm communities need to make healthy local econoimies through development. I work with the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer and we are anxious to work with the area financial institutions to offer linked deposit loans for historic preservation, tourism development and community enhancement in addition to many other linked deposit programs. Please visit our web site www.state.il.us/treas for more information or contact me at mmurdock@mail.state.il.us or 217-558-6170.

On 06-02-01 my husband, son and myself took part in the dedication of the Lincoln Praire Trail. We rode our bikes as far as we could and enjoyed the trail a great deal. I work in the town of Pana. Every chance I get, I pass on the news to people that Pana does have something to offer in the way of fun and education. The bike trail is one of the top things on my list now. It is great to get out and enjoy the sights as a family. Great Job to all who made it happen. Thanks a bunch!

My late father built the little race car "City of Roses" that participated in many a Pana Labor Day parade back in the 50's. Copied after the local racer Hector Honore had. sup, this is justin wardall, i'm from the pana high school. i went to the schools site and found a link for this so i was like oh what the heck, pana is a pretty cool town, but it's got a couple problems here and there. i'm not gonna sit here and name 'em cause let's face it, if you don't know what the problems are you shouldn't be living here, and if you don't care then you really shouldn't be living. this is our town and we need to step up and claim it. thanks. bye

Does anyone remember the ice cream wagon that Charlie and "Sparky" Maton operated? I worked in it when I was 15, back in 1964! We went to Tower Hill also!

What??!! I move away in the summer of 95...never to return and then stuff "starts" happening in Pana? What??!!

Seriously, I was back for 1 day visiting the folks in Oconee on the 4th of July weekend this year...went to Pana for the first time in... well 7 years, to gas up the car before trekking back to KC. heh.

It was night time so I couldn't see too much, but I felt a real sense of loss when I went to drive past the high school (which is now the Jr. High) and couldn't cut through between the new HS and old HS on the road I remember marching down in band camp because it no longer exists. And then there's the realization that there is this new building on top of the place the homecoming bonfires were held...Bah! What's that all about? hehehehe.

That's when other stuff starts sinking in, like I've been out of highschool for almost 10 years!! 10 years! Whoah!

Pana has changed so much since I graduated in 1994...it's bittersweet.

This is a great website. The old photos are beautiful. My father was born in Gillespie in 1931. He has Aunts who stayed in Pana. Dora And Tom Curdie who was a preacher. Mary and Creighton Newall who owned a restaurant and Dorothy Casement who may still have family there. My grandparents, George and Isabella Gibson, were from Scotland and had 8 children whilst in Gillespie. My grandfather was a brusher down the mine. If anyone has any information on any of my family, I would love to hear from them.

Does the Pana News have a website to view current issues? I moved from Pana about 13 years ago but still look forward to hearing about my hometown. This website is great and can help keep people informed about what is going on back home. I have been home to some Panther basketball games and it great to see that the community still supports the teams.

I am doing research on a man named John Milton Custer who moved to Pana in 1894. I was told he went there with his daughter and son in law and opened a hardware store in Pana named Custer and Alexander? He was a farmer at heart and I believe he and his brother Henry moved to Pana to semi retire and live on their farms. John Milton Custer died in Pana in 1904 and was brought back to New Philadelphia, Ohio for burial. Do you have any information on the Custers in Pana or any pictures of his hardware store? Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks, Randy L. Bente nipper1@adelphia.net

to whom it may concern. I have an article from a newspaper in 26th August 1924 about a friend who played in a marathon playing in your town. His name was David J.Livingstone and would be keen if you have any more information about this. He was according to the paper to have played for 102 hours sadly David passed away many years ago and left just a few newspaper clippings about his exploits.

GREAT SITE!!!! About time i guess. Glad to see Pana stepping into the 21st Century with the rest of the nation. I am curently stationed in Germany and would like to know how to contact via E-mail the Pana News. I have pictures and a story i would love to send on the 25th Anniversary Battle of the Bulge Memorial March. George McClung fought there in and died there in December 1944. I will be visiting his grave site in February and will have pictures of that too. If there is anyone who can shhot me an e-mail address for the paper would be greatly appreciated. By the way Mr Deere, excellent job on getting this accomplished. You have made Pana, once again, proud and proud of you.

Hello: I am looking for assistance in locating some information on someof my ancestors who lived and probably buried in or near Pana. Perhaps you could put me in contact with someone who does this sort of thing. My ancestor's names are William F. Fisher, born: 1813, died: 1901 and his wife Hannah Shaw Nichols, born: 1813, died 1896. I am interested in obtaining photos of their grave stones, copies of obituries. Also I have nothing expect the years of births and deaths and wonder if records might be obtained which give the month and date. I am also going to contact the Christian County Clerk in Taylorville. I am also wondering if there are any other Fishers buried at Pana? Thanks for any help you can give me. Jim Copeland, Pueblo West, CO

What a wonderful website. Kudo's to the city of Pana for developing such a state of the art site. It looks very professional and it is obvious a lot of effort was spent making the website complete.

I was unable to find rates etc. for the lodging in Pana which I was a little disappointed. The links did not work when I clicked on a particular site.

Keep up the good work.

3/10/03--Hi! I signed the guest book a year or two ago, and thought I'd update.

I graduated with the 1996 class and lived in Pana my whole life--the pictures bring back so many memories! It's been almost a year since I've been home to see the place (and my Mom, Bonnie Denbow Miller). I miss it!

I've been married now to Tracy (A SSGT in the Air Force) for over 6 years now. We are currently stationed in Pinedale, Wyoming at a small AF Detachment. We have Michael, who is 5 years old now and Anna, who is 3 1/2 years old. Take care!

Great site. Was just surfing the net and decided to look up Pana to see if any thing was there. Was I surprised. I left Pana in 1971 but as many people say I consider Pana my hometown. Many of the photos brought back memories of my youth. Taking my great grandma to the train station for her weekly trips to Taylorville, riding horses around Rosamond Cemetary when Bill and Betty Temmen owned the pony farm just up the road from the cemetary, sledding down 4th St and Grant St hills in the winter, delivering the Pana paper on horseback when the snow was to deep for bikes, fishing at the park and all the kid things we did on the west side of town with the Bardings, Dusts Evrleys, Kaisers and many others. I used to try and get back to Pana at least once a month but have been unable to for the last few years. Glad I found the site. It will definitely make me get back more often. Thanks again.

I love the photos of things I remember so well.Do you have any photos of the brick streets or the smoke stacks? My dad used to work at the green house and a dairy in and around Pana.My dad still had a rose bush from the old green house up until a year before he passed away he gave it to my sister. It is still blooming and growing it is over 40 years old.I remember the Fashion Lane, my mom still talks about getting an ice cream at the drug store and she shopped in Pana alot back in the 50's.

The web site is outstanding. It would be nice to see more pictures (the new high school & a shot of the amazing Labor Day parade are two that come to mind), but even without those the web site does a very thorough and complimentary job of describing Pana. The information about the walking tour is especially good. It would be nice to see that information included in Illinois tourism brochures.

First off I would like to say thanks to all you that are working on this project of putting Pana on the Net. You all have done a outstanding job and I know that all of you have spent a lots of time on it, when you could have been out on the beach or things. like golf ect. This is the first time I have visited the site, but I am sure I will log in again. Most folks think of Pana as City of Roses, but did they ever think of the many very talanted people our town has put out into the world. Dr. Butterfield for one. Also the many football players and Baseball Players. (Greeter) Wal-Mart Selma, California Ret Marine and also Post Office Best Regards, Eugene "Babe" Geisler

Does anyone remember any of the Asa brothers? John, Peter, Edward or Clarence. My father Thomas was born in Pana in 1926 (his father was John Asa-married to Viola). Unfortunately John passed away in 1932 and i'm trying to find anyone who might remember the family. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much

Linda Asa

DEAR CITY sorry to bother you I am writing from Mich, on a mission. Doing research on IL cities for a gift and surprise for 2 special boys. After trying other sources, I have reached a dead end. I am trying to get in touch with someone at the police and fire depts to ask a question. Since it is long distance, can you call, send them a fax, or my email. Or can I send my question to you. That is what webmasters have done to help me. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sherry White/Leap6615@aol.com

Nice, neat, website. Now if only you could clean up the town.Downtown is like a ghost town due to greedy people wanting a WalMart. I took my children to see a movie at Tanner's and there were several underage kids smoking, cussing, and screaming vulgar language at passing cars. I don't believe I'll be there again! A police drove by and did nothing.

nice site!! may I suggest you have listings of people who have rental houses, local merchants and a welcome wagon, which is a special day for newcomers, which receive welcome baskets donated by local merchants, and a picnic or something of that nature. we do this bi-monthly in our community and everyone enjoys it. It makes the newcomers feel more welcome and they also get to meet new people.

I pretty much grew up in Pana in the seventies. I miss the place dearly I do how ever visit pana when in the area as my mother lives in Taylorville now. I would have graduated in 1980 had I been smart and stayed in school. I still think of it as my graduating class. I did go back to school and obtained my GED and then went on to college for an AAS degree in mechanical design. I miss alot of the people I grew up with as I haven't seen or heard from them in over 20+ years if anyone remembers me I sure would like to hear from you. I love the website it brought back a ton of memories both good and bad. see you again soon

Your "Looking down Locust Street" photo is really "Looking East on Second Street from Locust". The old bank is on the left and the future Georges Candy Store is on the right. Love your old photos.... Give us more! John Emerick

A wonderful web site. My parents and grandparents lived in Herrick and Tower Hill. Other relatives lived in Pana. Always enjoyed visiting as a child. Would like to see Pana get a nice motel and some nice restaurants (little more upscale). You have done a great job with the web site!
